Sustainable Urban Infrastructure
It is becoming increasingly clear that the climate change battle will be won or lost in cities. Over half of the world’s population now lives in urban areas. Urban centers account for roughly 75 percent of the world’s global energy consumption, and for 80 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.
City administrators are taking note. Many are looking at the challenge from a global perspective and considering diverse sustainability initiatives that can be applied locally.
A research project sponsored by Siemens focuses specifically on technological levers that could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and waste disposal, and that could have an effect before 2025.
