Siemens Power Generation OSC has entered into an agreement to perform the operations and maintenance of the Caithness Long Island Energy power plant. The facility will be located in the Town of Brookhaven’s Empire Development Zone and interconnect to LIPA’s 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission system.

The power plant will be a combined-cycle facility that will generate approximately 350 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The power will come from a Siemens Power Generation 501F combustion turbine generator set and a steam turbine generator set that uses steam created from the exhaust heat of the combustion turbine. The CT exhaust heat is sent to a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) to produce the steam that drives the steam turbine generator set. The HRSG will include a supplemental natural gas firing system (duct burners) that will provide additional steam for increased electrical output from the steam turbine generator when needed.

The combustion turbine will run primarily on natural gas, but will have a low sulfur fuel oil back-up in the event that natural gas supplies are not available due to residential demand.

The commercial operations date of the facility is scheduled to occur in mid 2009. Recruiting for O&M employment at this plant is expected to begin in spring 2008.
